PUNE: In view of the fierce opposition from political parties and citizens, the Maharashtra government is finally seeking an extension to the helmet compulsion before the Bombay high court.A senior official, while confirming the same, told TNN that an affidavit has already been prepared and will be filed before the court on Thursday, pleading for an extension to the July 1 deadline.
The affidavit has been prepared after consultation with senior officials of the transport department.
The government will seek an extension to the July 1 deadline for compulsory use of helmets, the official said, adding that in case of an extension from the court, motorcyclists in Pune, Dhule and Nandurbar will get some more time. Other parts of the state have already implemented the helmet compulsion amidst strong protests and resentment. Deputy chief minister RR Patil, when contacted, confirmed filing an affidavit before the high court, but declined to divulge details. "Let's wait for the court decision," he said. The deputy chief minister last week in Mumbai had hinted at the possibility of the state government moving the court. After meeting transport department officials to discuss the issue, Patil had said the government will seek some more time to create public awareness on helmets.
